The Last Emperor

Last week, browsing thru blockbuster, i happened to see the cover of this movie "The Last Emperor"..with a little chinese kid on the front.

I had never heard of this movie, but the title seemed intruiging and ofcourse, a little kid being emporer was too good to pass. Anyways, the back of the cover said it had won 9 academy awards including Best Picture and Best Director back in 88!! For a movie i had never heard of, that's quite good.

So i rented it and i've been watching it (its more than 3 hours). I must say the awards were well deserved. It shows the life of the last emperor of China during the transition to becoming a communist republic. I recommend this movie to those who like watching long serious movies that actually have a point (i.e. anything that Scary Movie isn't).

In one seen neer the end, it shows clips of Japanese attacking China (Manchuria and then southern places)..which was one of the first civilian attacks..during WWII and then America dropping the two big nukes. Clearly illustrating that on both sides, it was really the innocent civilians that were being ruthlessly played in these political power games. Even if america's attack was necessary to stop a brutal evil..it really affected the families and kids ..and obviously future generations. But what is acceptable in order to stop a greater evil?
